Chicago — Sonja L. Connor, a registered dietitian nutritionist and research associate professor at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), became the 89th president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) on June 1, the organization reports.
She will serve through May 31, 2015.
“Now is the time for the academy and our members to move our profession forward and increase the recognition of registered dietitian nutritionists and dietetic technicians as food and nutrition experts in our workplaces and communities, nationally and internationally,” Connor says.
“I support elevating the level of dietetics practice across the board. Where practice is occurring at a very high level, we will showcase and support these programs and foster new ones.”
Previously chair-elect of AND’s board of directors and chair of its scholarship committee, she also served on the nominating committee, speaker of the house of delegates, worked on the strategic planning initiative task force and was research delegate to the academy’s council on professional issues.
Connor was past president of the Oregon Dietetic Association, past chair of the licensure committee and received AND’s 1996 Excellence in Research Award and the Oregon Academy’s Award of Merit in 1989.
At OHSU, Connor is director of the nutrition elective for medical students and developed the nutrition course for physician assistant students. She is the author of numerous scientific papers and books. Previously, she was a research dietitian at the University of Iowa Clinical Research Center.
