DuPont Tate & Lyle Launches Sustainable, Natural Humectant, Solvent

Wilmington, DE —  Zemea USP 1,3-propanediol is a natural, 100-percent biobased solvent and humectant that enhances flavors and preservative efficacy, according to DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products Co., LLP.

Made by fermenting glucose from corn starch using an environmentally sustainable process that uses less energy and produces fewer greenhouse emissions than petroleum-based glycols, it can be used to replace ethyl alcohol, glycerin and propylene glycol in confectionery and snacks, the company claims.

In addition, Zemea USP offers high freeze/thaw stability, antibacterial and antifungal properties and can be used as a flavor, extract and aroma carrier without contributing flavor or odor of its own.

GRAS-certified by the Flavor & Extracts Manufacturing Association, it has been tested and meets the requirements of the Food Chemicals Codex and U.S. Pharmacopeia. Zemea USP is certified kosher and halal.
