Minneapolis — IngreVita, a new oil blend of high oleic canola oil, fish oil and proprietary antioxidants that delivers long-chain omega-3s and boost products’ health profile, is being introduced by Cargill, Inc.
The oil can be handled similar to canola oil, making it easy to use; doesn’t negatively impact production costs or taste; and offers good shelf stability, according to the company.
Mike Landis, principal scientist, R&D, for Cargill, tells Candy & Snack TODAY the company had offered a flax-based oil that contained omega-3s, but the nutrients from flax aren’t metabolized as well as marine-based omega-3s.
“In another four to five years, we hope to breed the plant itself to produce a longer chain of omega-3s,” he says. “It’s an evolutionary process for us, in terms of omega-3 addition.”
Landis adds that although oil of this type is not typical in confectionery production, it is something that manufacturers might seek out “down the road as something to incorporate into a healthier product.”
Kristine Sanschagrin, marketing manager of specialty seeds and oil, says: “Consumers tell us they are looking for added nutrition in foods they buy, and there is a growing awareness of the benefits of omega-3s. IngreVita is perfect for manufacturers looking to include long-chain omega-3s in their food and beverage formulations.”
