Lee, MA — Klara’s Gourmet Cookies, LLC received Non-GMO Project certification for adhering to best practices by eliminating genetically engineered (GE) ingredients, and adhering to segregation and traceability to prevent contamination.
The company had to source egg whites and honey, as the previous animal-derived ingredients used were not non-GE verified, according to Owner Klara Sotonova. All other previous ingredients were already in compliance.
She tells Candy & Snack TODAY that the company submitted its products for initial assessment in February of this year.
“From there we signed a contract with the Non-GMO Project and proceeded to work with a third party-verification firm, Food Chain ID, to detail and investigate each of our ingredients,” Sotonova explains. “During the course of March, April and May we communicated with the producers of all of our ingredients to acquire the correct paperwork. All in all, the process took about 6 months.”
Packs for the company’s coconut macaroons, which was the 2014 sofi Silver Winner for Outstanding Cookie, and chocolate macaroons will bear the verification seal. The cookies are available in two- and eight-ounce clear bags with header cards and eight-ounce boxes. Larger packs have a SRP of $4.99, while the smaller bags carry a $1.49 SRP. All sizes ship 12 per case.
