Chicago — Paul Minger, nearing 45 years’ total service with Walgreen Co., is retiring after 12 years as category manager of confections.
However, he will not leave the candy field; he is switching sides of the desk to join Haribo of America, Inc. as vice-president of business development on September 1.
Haribo of America’s new CEO Sal Ferrara tells Candy & Snack TODAY the company will be very fortunate to have such a caliber of industry expert, adding: “Paul fully understands both everyday and seasonal, and his insights into category management and the needs of retailers will be a great asset to the Haribo brand. I am very enthused to be working side by side with this industry icon.”
Minger tells Candy & Snack TODAY: “It is a bittersweet feeling retiring from Walgreen and ending my career in retail. However, I am very proud of what I have accomplished, moving Walgreen from sixth- to second-largest candy retailer in the nation. I am particularly proud of what I did with premium and seasonal selections in the drug channel.”
The Candy Hall of Famer adds: “I am very excited about the new opportunity to work with Sal and Haribo and do great things for the worldwide gummi leader. My experience will help the supplier better understand what is needed at retail.”
Minger says he loves the confections category, which has great people, and he is enthused about staying in the field, adding his commute will be only nine miles longer.
