St. Peter Port, Guernsey — Tropical Farms Ltd., a subsidy of Agriterra Ltd., is rehabilitating 1,754 hectares of newly purchased land in south-east Sierra Leone to where it plans to produce cocao, coffee and other cash crops, the company reports. TFL is also seeking to secure another 2,000 hectares around the land.
CEO Andrew Groves explains: “Through TFL we have already established a successful cocoa trading business. With this acquisition and investment we are now entering the second phase of our growth strategy focused on developing our own plantations. We have an excellent team who have the expertise to rapidly scale up our in-country operations with the aim of becoming Sierra Leone's leading cocoa company.”
The company reports that 160 workers from the local area are currently being employed at the plantation. A modern nursery is being installed and is expected to be the largest and most technically advanced cocoa production facility in Sierra Leone.
