Zurich, Switzerland — Expanding its 10-year Cocoa Horizons sustainability initiative, Barry Callebaut AG will send its new Cocoa Horizons Truck to villages throughout Ivory Coast training farmers, providing health care services, child labor sensitization programs and literacy education. A team of farmer training experts, and in some cases a nurse and teacher, will begin their mission on the solar energy-powered vehicle in July in San Pedro, traveling east from there, Barry Callebaut reports. The truck will visit each village three to four times a year and stay for approximately one week at a time. The program will be tweaked based on the needs of the communities observed during the pilot program. “As part of our Cocoa Horizons activities we already have more than 50 Barry Callebaut employees on the ground in Ivory Coast who are directly working with more than 30,000 farmers. However we need to scale up our activities,” says Cocoa Horizons Group Manager Nicholas Camu. “At the end of the one-year pilot phase we will evaluate the impact of the Cocoa Horizons Truck. If everything works according to plan, we intend to increase the number of trucks successively. We expect to reach up to 10,000 cocoa farmers across Ivory Coast in the first year.”
