April Retail Sales Increase

Washington — Total retail sales, excluding motor vehicles and parts, totaled $340.3 billion in April, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s advance monthly estimates, up 2.8 percent from the year prior and down 0.1 percent from March 2013 results.
Food and beverage store sales decreased 0.8 percent from the month prior, but increased two percent from the year prior to $53.7 billion. Grocery store sales totaled $48.1 billion in April, a two percent increase from 2012 and a 0.5 percent decrease from March.
