June 27, 2013
Alexandria, VA — The c-store industry had a record year in 2012 with $700.3 billion in sales and saw a 2.2 percent increase in in-store sales at $199.3 billion, according the National Association of Convenience Stores' (NACS) State of the Industry report.
NACS reports sweets and alternative snacks, including meat snacks and health, energy and protein bars, contributed heavily to the sales gains with a 12.2 percent uptick in alternative snacks and a 10.3 percent increase in sweet snacks.
“The industry’s bifurcation also continues, with a considerable difference between top and bottom quartile performers,” NACS reports. “Top quartile performers had prepared food profits 2.4 times greater than the bottom quartile and packaged beverage sale that were 2.3 times greater than the bottom quartile.”
