Research: Chewing Gum Helps Relieves Depression

Erzurum, Turkey — Chewing gum can help reduce symptoms of depression, a new study from the Ataturk University School of Medicine in Turkey found.
Researchers monitored 30 patients with mild to moderate depression that were given either anti-depressants combined with chewing gum or medication only for a period of six weeks. Using a Turkish adaptation of the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, the physicians observed a better response to the medicine among patients who also chewed gum. Results show gastrointestinal symptoms, such as loss of appetite and flatulence, improved most.
“These results indicate that chewing gum might not be directly effective on depressed mood; however, it may reduce symptoms originating from depression,” researchers report.
