Washington, DC — Dollar sales for the overall candy category grew 2.5 percent during the latest 52-week period, ending March 24, reports the NCA citing IRI numbers.

The Association attributes the growth during the period to an early Easter season, which occurred during the final week of March.

Broken down further, non-chocolate led the category with sales gains for 4.9 percent, while chocolate recorded increases of 3.9 percent. Although gum sales are beginning to level, the segment is still challenged, as dollar sales fell 6.6 percent during the period, the NCA reports.
