London — The Hershey Co. has signed the International Cocoa Organization’s Abidjan Cocoa Declaration, pledging to address challenges facing the cocoa industry by providing opportunities for smallholder farmers to improve their livelihood and implementing cocoa development plans in order to achieve sustainability.
Hershey Vice-President of Global Commodities Frank G. Day signed the declaration in late February, bringing the total number of signatures to 34.
“Hershey is one of the Declaration’s largest stakeholder signatories, which range from cocoa growers through their governments to civil society and most of the world's largest manufacturers of chocolate,” ICCO reports.
The Abidjan Cocoa Declaration reflects the more detailed proposals of the Global Cocoa Agenda. Both initiatives will be discussed at the 2014 World Cocoa Conference in Amsterdam.
