Minneapolis — Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate’s Gerkens cocoa powders and its Peter’s, Wilbur and Veliche chocolate brands are now available in sustainable-certified versions in North America, part of the company’s Cargill Cocoa Promise sustainability initiative. The products boast certifications from organizations including UTZ, Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade.
“We are now able to provide our North American customers the additional benefit of sustainable certification for the high quality products and brands they rely on,” Cargill reports. “It means manufacturers will be able to offer products to their consumers with greater reassurance they have been produced sustainably and that they are making a positive difference to smallholder cocoa farmers.”
The Cargill Cocoa Promise was implemented in 2012. The company partners with local governments, NGOs, customers and farmer organizations in what Cargill claims is an effort to improve the lives of farmers and their communities.
