Retail Sales Rise In May

Washington — U.S. retail and food service sales rose 0.6 percent to reach $421.1 billion during May, which represents a 4.3 percent year-on-year increase, according to advance estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Sales in food and beverage stores reached $56.2 billion, an increase of 0.7 percent compared with the month prior and 3.1 percent higher than May 2012, the Bureau reports. In grocery, sales came in at $50.2 billion, also representing an increase of 0.7 from the previous month totals and a 2.9 percent gain compared with the same period this past year.

Total retail sales, excluding motor vehicles and parts, reached $342 billion, a 0.3 percent gain compared with April and a 3.4 percent year-on-year increase.
