Washington — The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) is opening a food traceability center to serve as an authoritative, scientific and unbiased source for tracing food throughout all stages of production, IFT reports.

IFT Excecutive Vice-President Barbara Byrd Keenan says: “We will create a focal point where industry, academic institutions, government, foundations and consumer groups can discuss, collaborate, conduct research, adopt best practices, and implement practical and actionable traceability solutions for the food system.”

The center was developed from three Traceability Research Summits held in 2011 as part of the IFT Traceability Improvement Initiative, launched to improve food safety, the organization claims. The new facility will focus on research and development, protocols and standards, technology transfer, education and training.
