Washington — As awareness of genetically modified ingredients (GMOs) grows in both the media and among consumers, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is launching a website at factsaboutgmos.org detailing the safety, prevalence and benefits of genetically modified food ingredients.
GMA CEO Pamela Bailey says: “Genetically modified food ingredients are not only safe for people and our planet, but they have a number of important benefits. This technology has been used safely in the food supply in the United States for twenty years, and seventy to eighty percent of the food we eat in the United States, at home and away from home, contains ingredients that have been genetically modified.”
Modern agricultural biotechnology allows American food to remain affordable, while protecting and preserving natural resources by using less land, fewer pesticides and less water, Bailey adds. Further, she says by 2050 the U.S. will need to expand food production by 70 percent to keep pace with global population growth.
The website shares links and articles about the safety of GMOs from sources ranging from the FDA to the New York Times. It also features information about how GMOs can help feed the 875 million people worldwide suffering from hunger.
“GMA and its member companies will continue to advocate for the safe and effective use of agricultural biotechnology to increase the food supply while lowering cost,” Bailey says. “We will continue to engage in an informative dialogue with our consumer so that they understand the safety, prevalence and benefits of GM technology and so that they can make informed choices for themselves and their families.”
