Abokro, Ivory Coast — The Hershey Co. and Barry Callebaut AG have inaugurated a primary school that can also serve as a community and farmer training center in Ivory Coast for the 2013-2014 school year, where 150 school-age children are enrolled.

The Hershey Learn to Grown Abokro School is equipped with three furnished classrooms with solar-powered lighting, Hershey claims, a solar-powered water well, infirmary, a cafeteria serving subsidized meals and housing for teachers and medical staff.

Hershey says the Ministry of Education manages the school and its infirmary is staffed and operated by the Ministry of Health. A school committee is being formed and will include teachers and community members, including representatives of the Cooperative Agricole de Glibeadji, which consists of nearly 900 farmers and has long been engaged in Barry Callebaut's cocoa farmer-advocacy programs, Hershey reports.
