Minneapolis — Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.’s Xpert S400 x-ray machine is specifically designed to detect metal, glass, dense plastic and foreign objects in vertical pack formats such as cartons and standup pouches.

The company reports the machine's algorithms were developed specifically for packs with tall profiles. Further, the S400 targets packs representing 20 to 30 percent of the x-ray market where previous methods were expensive, and difficult to use and install.

With the ability to handle up to 500 packs per minute, the unit has a compact length to enable placement in tight spaces and adjustable x-ray source and detector height to match already existing conveyors in the manufacturing facility, according to Thermo Fisher.

In addition to x-rays, the machine can analyze an image and estimate fill level or determine whether a pack is damaged or missing a closure.
