Alexandria, VA — Convenience stores added 2,062 units in 2013, raising the total to 151,282, a 1.4 percent increase from 2012, according to the 2014 National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS)/Nielsen Convenience Industry Store Count.
Growth among c-stores with fuel pumps was twice that of units without: 87 percent of c-stores sell gasoline, up 2.3 percent from 2013. Jeff Leonard, NACS communications director, explains: “More stores are adding gasoline operations, especially the newer ones, and more gas stations are adding convenience.”
The report claims c-stores account for 34.3 percent of all retail units in the U.S., significantly outnumbering drug (41,378), supermarket/supercenter (37,459) and dollar stores (24,853). Nearly 63 percent of c-stores are single-unit operations.
Texas leads the U.S. in number of c-stores with 15,191, followed by California, Florida, New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Virginia, Nielsen data indicate.
