Miami — Dean Spangler, chairman of Spangler Candy Co., was recognized for his industry contributions with the NCA Distinguished Service Award.
NCA Chairman and Jelly Belly Candy Co. President and COO Bob Simpson presented Spangler with the award, which honors individuals who have worked tirelessly throughout their careers to benefit the confectionery industry in a lasting way, in front of the record State of the Industry crowd.
Simpson explained Spangler was instrumental in transforming the company into a instantly recognizable brand, as Dum Dums went from the fifth best selling lollipop brand into the first on his watch. He added that during his involvement in NCA committees Spangler challenged his peers and worked to make the industry's long-term success the primary focus.
Upon receiving the award, Spangler thanked family, friends and the NCA. “It seems funny to get an award for doing something that was always enjoyable,” he added. “I'm proof that at the age of 66, if do what you love, you'll love what you do.”
