Q.        Where can I get my candy x-rayed?
A.        We cannot answer that question.  This is a national 800 number hotline for police and medical officials.  We cannot respond to local questions.  Call your nearest hospital, or  poison control center.

Q.        Can the hotline number be given to the public?
A.        No.  The Hotline is exclusively for medical and law enforcement officials. 

Q.        What is the Hotline for?  What service do you provide?
A.        The hotline is a service provided by the U.S. confectionery industry for police and medical officials to assist them in handling complaints of alleged tampering of candy products.

Q.        Questions concerning wrapping, i.e. the ends are not sealed.
A.        Explain it is most likely a manufacturing defect, and you will report it at once to the manufacturer.  Ask that they save the wrapping and all of the product to show the manufacturer.

Q.        The chocolate is covered with a white powder.  What is it?
A.        It may be nothing more than what is know as “bloom” which occurs when chocolate has been improperly stored.  However, we will report it to the manufacturer immediately. Ask that they save the wrapper and all of the product to show the manufacturer.

Q.        I felt sick (i.e. burning sensation in mouth, felt nauseous, faint, light-headed, or dizzy) after eating a piece of candy.  What do I do?
A.        Explain the hotline does not provide specific medical advice.  Suggest they contact their local poison control center, local hospital emergency room, or family doctor.  Explain you will report the incident immediately to the manufacturer.  Also ask that they save what remains of the product and its wrapper for the manufacture

Q.        My chocolate has a chemical taste, like alcohol or pesticide.
A.        Chocolate is a very absorbent product.  It often takes on the flavor and smell of whatever it is stored near.  At some point in shipping, it may have been stored near a stronger smelling product.  However, the Hotline will report it to the manufacturer immediately.  Ask that they save what remains of the product and its wrapper.

Q.        There is a pin, tack or staple in my candy.
A.        Explain that, in rare cases, this is the result of a manufacturing defect.  In other cases, it may be a legitimate tampering incident.  The manufacturer will be notified immediately. Ask that they save the product and wrapper.

Q.        It looks like my candy has a piece of glass inside.  What do I do?
A.        It may be nothing more than crystallized sugar.  If so, it should dissolve in a glass of water.  If it does not dissolve, it may be glass.  In this case, report it to the Hotline and we will contact the manufacturer.
