September 7, 2008 Retail Sales Summary (Information Resources, Inc.)

September 7, 2008

Food Drug and Mass Outlets Information
Drug Store Retailers posted an especially strong four week and twelve week sales period growing unit sales and dollar sales during the key back to school period to lead the confectionery category to a strong 3.7% growth rate. Drug stores grew their sales 8.5% during the four week period ending September 7 and 7.5% for the twelve week period. They did it by promoting chocolate confectionery, which grew 12% for the four week period and 8% for the twelve week.

Mass retailers did not fare as well during the most recent four week period as sales declined 1.9% but supermarket retailers turned in a consistent 2.7% growth rate during the period.

In addition to the strong chocolate candy sales during this period, sugarless gum continues to post double digit sales gains and licorice and chewy candies are growing at a 10% clip. Early indications are showing we can expect a strong Halloween season based on early sales trends and the fact that the Halloween Holiday falls on a weekend.
