Christmas 2008 Sales

December 28, 2008

According to IRI, overall Christmas confectionery sales declined at a 3.1% rate. Supermarket sales declined 2.6%; Drug Stores 0.3% and Mass Merchants 7.7%. Like many other categories, confectionery sales were negatively impacted by the economy and the lack of shopper traffic in stores in November and early December plus there was also a shortened Christmas selling season. There were five less days between Thanksgiving and Christmas in 2008 than in 2007.

Chocolate seasonal candy sales declined 2.3% and non-chocolate seasonal confections declined 7.9%.
