February sales remain positive despite a modest holiday selling season

February 29, 2010

Candy and gum sales posted modest sales for the four week period ending February 21, 2010, due in part to weak sales for the Valentine's Day sales period.

However, unlike last year sales did grow 2.9% in FDMx for the four week period ending February 21, 2010 according to IRI. When Valentine's Day falls on a weekend consumers often decide on other celebrations for the holiday such as dinner or a weekend away and confectionery sales suffer.

For the most recent fifty-two week period, dollar sales of confectionery products posted a solid 4.9% growth rate. Surprisingly, non-chocolate sales led the charge with 6.3% growth. Gum sales increased 5.1% over the past year while chocolate sales were just behind with 4.1%.

Supermarket sales grew 6.3%; drug stores 2.9% and convenience inched ahead 2.3% in the past fifty-two weeks.
