April 19, 2010 Retail Sales Summary (SymphonyIRI Group)

The 2010 Easter confectionery selling season preformed well for the confectionery category. For the 12 week selling period, there was 3.8% sales increase according to the SymphonyIRI Group.

For the fifty-two week period ending April 19, 2010, IRI reports a 4.0% increase in dollar sales for the confectionery category this is slightly ahead of 2009 figures.

Non-chocolate candy sales led the increase with 5.6% growth followed by gum with a 3.8% increase and chocolate candy with a 2.3% sales increase in the FDMx channels. Surprisingly, drug stores have posted a the least growth with a meager 1.3% sales increase while supermarkets bounded with a healthy 5.7% nearly double their sale for this same period in 2009.

IRI reports that confectionery sales in convenience stores have grown 3.9% in the past 12 weeks and 2.4% in the past fifty-two weeks.
