IRI August 8, 2010 Retail Sales Summary (SymphonyIRI Group)
Despite continuing uncertainty in the economy, the confectionery category is continuing to show strength and build momentum as dollar sales grew in all channels led by grocery up 5.4% over latest 52 weeks.
Sales growth continues to be encouraging as we are seeing an increase driven in both dollar sales and unit. Units in confectionery products are now tracking ahead at +1.9% for FDMx in the latest 52 weeks and +3% for the latest 12 weeks. This suggests shoppers are willing to pay a little more for their favorite treat.
Confectionery sub-categories are all showing positive movement, both is dollars and units, suggesting accelerated organic growth coming out of the summer months - the latest twelve week unit sales trends show chocolate +5.4, non-chocolates +2.0, and gum again showing growth at +1.7%.
