IRI September 5, 2010 Retail Sales Summary (SymphonyIRI Group)
Total Dollar sales for confectionery remain strong with sales up 4.1 percent driven by chocolate +4.3 percent and non-chocolate +4.2 percent. Unit sales gains for chocolate and non chocolate are also tracking with dollar growth trends indicating stable growth in the largest two segments.
Gum dollar trends are gaining 3.3 percent while units are flat vs. a year ago. The supermarket channel is leading all sales growth at +5.5 percent followed by Mass +4.9 percent and Wal-Mart +3.7 percent*. The drug channel contines to lag with only a modest 1.4 percent increase in the past fifty-two weeks - gum being the stronger player in that channel garnering a 2.7 percent gain.
More recent 4 and 12 week unit trends for the category also suggest stability in confectionery as we enter the fall seasonal merchandising periods.
