IRI December 26, 2010 Retail Sales Summary

Key highlights:

Sales up for the year 4% in FDMx

Driven by Chocolate up 5%

Non Chocolate grew 2.6% while gum was up 2.7%

Channels

While overall confectionery sales at Convenience stores grew slightly less than FDMx at +3.4%, sales for Chocolate outpaced FDMx for the year up 6.8% with unit sales showing growth consistent with dollars at up 6.9%.

Sales for Grocery channel were up nearly 5% for overall confectionery again driven by chocolate with 6% growth in sales and 5.2% growth in unit sales.  Unit sales for chocolate are accelerating with latest 12 weeks up 5% and December period sales up 6.4%.  Gum unit sales have stabilized and are returning to growth while Non-chocolate softened in the fourth quarter.

Drug store sales of candy & gum lagged overall growth at +2.3% yet accelerated in the fourth quarter and holiday period with December sales +6.6%.  Again chocolate lead all dollar growth at +9.5% during the December period with unit sales soaring 14.5% during the same period.
