Confectionery dollar sales continue upward, yet higher retail prices are impacting velocity
Sales for confectionery at Food Drug and Mass according to Symphony IRI are up 4.2% for the latest 52 weeks ending September 4th led by chocolate up 6% and non-chocolate up 2.8%. Gum sales are flat vs. year ago at -0.1%. Growth in unit sales of 2% for total candy and gum have compressed to half the dollar sales growth trends in response to price elasticity from rising commodity and retail prices.
Annual Candy and Gum sales in the Grocery channel are up 3.7% yet over the latest quarter growth rates are slowing slightly to +2.2%. Sales in Drug stores continue to lead all channels, up 5.7% and have accelerated to +8.1% over the most recent quarter. Convenience store sales continue to grow at +3.3% and have also picked up the pace to +5% over the latest 12 weeks.
