Summer Confectionery Sales See Units Slip
The latest 52 week consumption for candy and gum at FDMW* through June 10, 2012 picked up momentum with 2.8 percent sales increase as reported by SymphonyIRI. Units remain down 3.8 percent continuing an inflation trend we have seen over the past year.
Convenience stores led all channels with gains of 7.6 percent in dollars followed by mass with a +4.0 percent increase in the past 52 weeks. Chocolate is the segment leader so far this summer at +4.0 percent in dollars while non-chocolate followed slightly behind with +3.4 percent. Four week trends show candy and gum up about half the annual trend at 2.2 percent in dollars while units fell by 6.2 percent.
