Confectionery products continue to be a solid center store performer
Despite ongoing uncertainty in the economy, the confectionery category is a center store superstar as dollar sales grew in all channels led by convenience up 6.3 percent over latest fifty-two weeks ending August 12, 2012 according to the SymphonyIRI Group.
Unit sales remain flat or slightly behind across all channels indicating incremental price increases. This suggests shoppers are most apt to seek out deals or promotions in order to enjoy their favorite treat.
Most confectionery sub-categories are showing positive movement, suggesting accelerated growth coming out of the summer months - the latest twelve week unit sales trends in FDMx show chocolate +2.2, non-chocolates +1.7, and gum lagging with a -6.1 percent loss.
