Dollar sales for confectionery showed a minimal growth of 2.3 percent in FDMx over the 52 week period according to SymphonyIRI. Sales increases were driven by chocolate +3.6 percent and non-chocolate +2.8 percent with gum decreasing 4.2 percent. Unit sales continue to remain compressed across all segments with a 4.1 percent loss over the past 52 weeks.
The supermarket and drug channels are neck and neck in sales performance with both showing a gain of 1.9 and 2.0 percent respectively. With back to school and Halloween promotions hitting earlier than ever this year in retail stores, the monthly outlook in October should be more promising.
