NCA's 2011 Supplier Member of the Year - Fred Hintlian

Like many of our esteemed colleagues, Fred has been in the candy industry as long as he's been alive. His father and two uncles started a general line candy and nut company, known as Deran Confectionery, in 1929. Fred's father served as chief engineer, designing and installing production lines - and often shared his creations with his young son. During summer breaks, Fred began working for Deran assembling machine parts.

In 1973 the company was sold and a few years later Fred's family founded Varick Enterprises to represent several European equipment manufacturers. Today Fred serves as the president of the company.

The industry has been blessed over the years, by Fred's willingness to help others. He's presented numerous technical papers at AACT's annual meetings and has served on PMCA's program committee.

NCA is particularly grateful for the time and energy Fred has invested in NCA. A long time member of the Supplier Advisory Committee, Fred served as Vice Chairman from 2000 until 2002 and served as Chairman from 2002 through 2004. He has continued to be an active committee member since that time.

Fred also served on the SWEETS & SNACKS EXPO Committee, known at that time as the ALL CANDY EXPO Committee.

Last year, Fred was inducted into the NCSA's Candy Hall of Fame. Upon his induction, Fred noted that his mother and father had been extremely influential in shaping his career. He also credited one of his supplier partners, Francesco Rizzi, who taught him more about equipment and inspired him to learn Italian. Fred says that their exchanges helped him learn more about cultural diversity and business.

Anyone who knows Fred won't be surprised to hear that he learned Italian to be a better business partner. It's that level of dedication and loyalty that helps Fred stand out in the industry.

Fred has been a wonderful supplier member of NCA, and we're pleased and proud to present him with the 2011 Supplier Member of Year.
