NCA's 2012 Distinguished Service Award recipient is Tom Joyce, of The Hershey Company.
Tom has shown unusual dedication to NCA throughout the years. He has served on the Board of Trustees, the Executive Board and numerous committees including the customer relations Committee, the State of Industry Conference Committee, the EXPO Committee, the International Sales Development Committee and more.
Tom is Vice President, Global Customer & Industry Affairs of The Hershey Company. Tom is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with Hershey's customers and representing the Company in various global trade associations including NCA, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the Food Marketing Institute, NACS, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores and the American Wholesale Marketers Association. Joyce joined The Hershey Company as Sales Merchandiser in Louisville, Kentucky, 36 years ago.
In 2003, Tom was inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame. In 2010 he joined the Convenience Store News Hall of Fame. Certainly, he's proud of these honors, but not as proud as he is of his two children and two granddaughters.
Wherever you go in this industry - whoever you talk to - everyone knows Tom and everyone praises him. He knows so much about the category and is willing to share his knowledge.
Despite his long career with Hershey, Tom is always able to put his industry hat on to help the category as a whole prosper. Whether working on the EXPO, this conference, our customer relations committee or helping to draft NCA's strategic plan Tom's vision for the industry is always on target.
In his service to NCA, Tom is always one of the first members to volunteer to help and serve the industry. He never gives us anything less than his full time and attention and he goes above and beyond every single time. His input is constructive and his recommendations have made a big difference to NCA over the years.
Tom has been a big help to NCA over the years and we have always appreciated his on-going counsel.
We've heard from a lot of people in support of Tom's nomination, but I think Rick Ross accurately characterized Tom the best when he said, "Tom is a true leader and works many hours behind the scenes to make things happen. He has passion and drive to help the category. He always stays focused and is very supportive to do what is right for the industry."
