NCADr. Nancy Snyderman tells attendees: "Candy connects us." NCA Sweets & Snacks Expo announces most innovative products
The 18th annual Sweets & Snacks Expo, the largest in show history, served as the platform to announce NCA's Most Innovative New Product Award winners from nine categories including gum and mints to savory snacks to chocolate, as well as the inaugural overall Best in Show award, The Hershey Company’s York Minis. Education was a major component at the event, including NBC Chief Medical Editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman, who referred to candy as part of a “global continuum” that connects us. Media including ABC, Fox, NBC and WGN lauded the Expo as one of Chicago’s sweetest events. The 2015 show floor is nearly 90 percent sold out. Contact Libby Taylor.
NCA NCA John H. Downs, Jr., named new president of NCA
This month NCA announced the appointment of its new president, John H. Downs, Jr., senior advisor to the president of Coca Cola Americas. Downs has a proven background in communications, public affairs, government relations, association management, international affairs and corporate social responsibility. Last week he spent a day at the Sweets & Snacks Expo, visiting with NCA members and getting his first taste of the confectionery and snack industry. Downs will begin his tenure on August 18. NCA NCA New Expo events provide young professionals networking opportunities
The 2014 Sweets & Snacks Expo provided industry young professionals as well as interested students from 13 local schools with opportunities to network with one another and their peers during two inaugural events. On Monday evening more than 250 of the industry’s young professionals gathered at Gene and Georgetti as part of a reception and dinner for NCA’s Young Professionals Network. The YPN gathering provided networking opportunities for the emerging leaders of the industry in their 40s and under. Also at the Expo, the Confectionery Foundation hosted its inaugural career fair to further industry career opportunities for young adults. NCA members Capol LLC, Gimbal’s Fine Candies, The Hershey Company, Jelly Belly Candy Company and Mondelēz International, Inc., participated in the fair. Contact Libby Taylor.
NCA NCA Easter dollar sales grow in 2014
Today NCA announced that Easter 2014 dollar sales rose by 6 percent across confectionery channels and categories excluding gum. Chocolate led the growth at 7.1 percent and non-chocolate experienced gains of 2.8 percent. NCA’s VP of customer relations, Larry Wilson, attributes the growth in part, to an extended Easter sales period due to the lateness of the holiday. Contact Larry Wilson.

  • Last month the Food Waste Reduction Alliance, a cross-sector initiative led by the Food Marketing Institute, the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the National Restaurant Association, released its Best Practices and Emerging Solutions Toolkit. It features a collection of successful strategies and examples that food manufacturers, retailers and food service operators can use to keep food waste out of landfills and reduce food waste at the source.

  • In July the Food Export Association of the Midwest is hosting a focused trade mission to Mexico for snack foods, one of the fastest growing food industry segments in Mexico. Registration for the event closes this Friday; contact Karen Horan if interested.

  • To help companies understand FDA labeling regulations, NCA is hosting Labeling Basics and Beyond on July 8-9 in Washington, D.C. Topics include current mandatory label requirements, proposed label changes, -action lawsuits and other external threats, front-of-pack labeling, genetically modified ingredient labeling, and foreign manufacturing issues.

  • Sweets & Snacks Middle East will once again host a USA Pavilion at the upcoming show, November 9-11, 2014, in Dubai; NCA members will have reduced rates to participate in the pavilion. Sweets & Snacks Middle East is the only specialized trade fair for confectionery and snack items in the Middle East and North Africa region. Contact Karen Horan.
