NCA Sugar program gouges American consumers
The Heritage Foundation released a report this month denouncing the current U.S. sugar program for subsidizing large-scale sugar growers at the expense of American sugar consumers. The paper proves that despite dumping allegations, Mexican sugar in the U.S. costs more than the world average.

Earlier this month Senators Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced a bipartisan amendment to the appropriations bill that funds the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prohibit federal handouts to some of the largest sugar processors in the United States. Unfortunately the amendment was withdrawn before it came up for a vote. Contact Liz Clark.

NCA Collaborating with industry partners to advance industry goals
Collaborating with industry partners provides a strong, unified voice from the confectionery industry to Capitol Hill. To further these efforts, NCA participated in two industry events – Retail Confectioners International’s Annual Convention & Industry Expo in St. Louis and the National Association of Manufacturer’s 2014 Manufacturing Summit in Washington, D.C. During the NAM Summit, members of Congress participated in the discussions to learn firsthand the priorities for manufacturers and how best to meet their needs. Liz Clark and Zara Khaleeli provided regulatory and legislative updates focusing on small business and retail issues, sugar reform efforts, GE/GMO labeling initiatives and state affairs efforts at the RCI convention. Retail insights and emerging shopper trends
The increasing significance of health and wellness in supermarket offerings was a key discussion point at FMI Connect, the Food Marketing Institute’s annual trade show this month. The retailer group also stressed the importance of emotional enjoyment of food through experiences, a growing need for trust and transparency from manufacturers, and the importance of value to consumers.   •  Larry Levin, executive vice president, industry insights at IRI Worldwide will host the “Activating Sweet (and Salty) Success with Your Shopper Segments” webinar on Thursday, July 10 at 1 p.m. Registration is free for NCA members and customers.
