Photo Wednesday: Sixlets

I had a really hard time choosing between the three Sixlet photos SweetWorks uploaded to the Candy Dish Blog Flickr pool. They were all lovely in a different geometric way. In the end, I picked this one (DecoSixlets_3)because I found the texture on the front piece of candy compelling.

Check out the DecoSixlets_1 and DecoSixlets_2.

Photo Wednesday: Gummi Wars

Photo Wednesday
Flickr user chanchan22 has submitted some fun photos to the Candy Dish Blog Flickr pool. It turns out that this user is using gummi candy to make various scenes from the Star Wars films. I think this is great fun and as much as I love gummi dinosaurs and hate Darth Maul, I am glad Darth was able to overcome his attackers. The dinosaurs had it all wrong. All Darth Maul ever really needed was a hug and a handful of gummi candy to overcome his anger.

Photo Wednesday: Marshmallows and Strawberry

Non-Chocolate, Photo Wednesday
This is a photo by Vintage Confections, which makes lots of great stuff. Be sure to check them out. What I love about this photo is that it is descriptive. You see the pink marshmallows and then the fruit and know immediately what flavor they are. There are technical elements of the photo that I would change but overall I would say it was well done because it communicates the intended message. Good job, folks!

Photo Wednesday: M&Ms

Chocolate, Photo Wednesday
I like this photo. It's in-focus, clean and clear. The colors make it visually stimulating and pleasing. Nothing complicated here. I just plain like it. Plus, it's a good reminder that Easter has passed and that those of you whop perhaps gave up chocolate or other sweet stuff in observance of Lent should get back to enjoying the sweetness of life.

Photo Wednesday: Easter Peeps Hors d'Oeuvres

Holidays, Non-Chocolate, Photo Wednesday, Savory
Cybele from Candy Blog posted some sweet and savory mashups last year involving Peeps. One of them, pictured below, was Peeps and pepperoni. I guess in the end that makes it Peeparoni. I love Cybele's photography. She is really good at getting a stark white background, which is a favorite of mine and sometimes a photographic challenge.

We featured another of Cybele's savory Peeps photos last year. Cybele, thanks for making these great pictures. You do great work! I'd love to be at your table for Easter to enjoy some of these treats you made. Fortunately, I think I can figure out the recipes by looking at the pictures.

Photo Wednesday: Boiling the Syrup

Non-Chocolate, Photo Wednesday
I love the photos made by This Charming Candy. Their shallow depth of field adds a dreamy quality to this image, a stopped moment in time during the boiling of candy syrup. Something really special here is the moment they took this photo. You can see that it was right after adding the blue color to the liquid, giving us an inside view into the manufacturing process. I used one of their photos before and really enjoy the angles and other aspects of their photographic work.

Photo Wednesday: Mini Chocolate Easter Eggs

Chocolate, Photo Wednesday
It's getting toward that time of year when we see more eggs, pastel colors and of course chocolate, which is a perennial favorite among those of us here at NCA. Easter season is upon us. The Peeps are flocking back home and before long, Tori will be making s'mores out in the woods with her camping friends.

Thanks to Frances Civello, who makes all manner of wonderful photos, for this one. It really brings the springtime into my heart as the last of the snow seems to be melting.

Photo Wednesday: Tower of Chocolate

Chocolate, Photo Wednesday
Flickr user Gryfon submitted this photo to our Flickr group. What I like about it is the roughness of the edges of the chocolate paired with the regular flatness of the slabs, enabling them to be stacked. The white chocolate in there is a nice addition and really catches the eye.

The vertical positioning is good, being centered on a "third" line. The only way I can think of to improve this photo would be to make the background darker. However, a totally black background may not work because the chocolate would appear to be floating in the ether. I am not sure offhand how to change that. It looks really good as is, though, with the dark but not black background. I am a big fan of shooting against black and printing against white. I wonder how it would look then.

Great job!

Photo Wednesday: Chopping Chocolate

Chocolate, Photo Wednesday
In this photo Rachel Rappaport, one of my favorite food bloggers, is chopping chocolate to make Ovaltine Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream. I know it's still a little cold out to be eating ice cream, but I wanted to plant this seed in your head for when the weather improves.

I love the selective focus in this photo. It was taken at f1.8, which offers a very shallow depth of field, giving it a very stylized look. The angle of view is great as well. Diagonal lines are very visually appealing. Great job, Rachel!

Photo Wednesday: Candy Apples at an Open-Air Market

Non-Chocolate, Photo Wednesday
My good friend and fellow candy enthusiast Devlon, who lives in Vancouver, posted this photo to our Flickr group. You met Devlon before, remember? He has a great eye for composition and takes some really great photos and yada yada yada but really what I love about this shot is that it reminds me of open-air markets, and right now it's too cold for that here in the DC area. It makes me long for the warmth of sunshine and a day spent outside at the market. A candy apple would be good too. If Devlon inspires you to make candy or caramel apples at home, go to it and let us know how they were.
