Guittard Chocolate Company was founded in 1868 and is the oldest family-owned and operated chocolate company in the United States. The company’s first products were sold on the streets of San Francisco, where its founder, French chocolatier Etienne Guittard, sold chocolate made from his family recipe to newly wealthy goldminers.
Headquartered in Burlingame, Calif., since 1955, Guittard is now run by President and CEO Gary Guittard, who maintains his great grandfather’s commitment to supporting the local community. Guittard provides financial support to educational and charitable organizations, including the UC Davis Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, and the San Francisco Boys and Girls Club.
Guittard is a member of the World Cocoa Foundation and the International Cocoa Initiative, organizations dedicated to improving cocoa farm practices through education, training and development for cocoa farmers. Today, the company manufacturers a range of signature E. Guittard retail chocolate products, many of which are made with beans from a single origin country. A cornerstone of Guittard’s business is supplying fine chocolate as a bulk ingredient to the broader confectionery industry.
