Lokeren, Belgium — Barry Callebaut AG is further ingraining its business in Belgium with the construction of a global distribution center (GDC) that will include a low bay and fully automated high bay warehouse that will have a combined capacity of more than 60,000 kilograms per square meter, according to the supplier.
The company reports it will lease the warehouse on a long-term basis from Warehouses De Pauw and the new site handover is anticipated to occur during the third quarter of 2021.
The new center will become the logistic hub for the chocolate maker, and allows the company to consolidate its activities currently located across several locations in the Aalst, Belgium, region, Barry Callebaut reports. The GDC will handle the vast majority of products in Barry Callebaut’s gourmet & specialties division, decorations segment and solid chocolate for food manufacturers.
“The global expansion of our products has increased rapidly in recent years, and we anticipate that this trend will continue in the future,” says Massimo Garavaglia, Barry Callebaut president for the EMEA. “The new global distribution center is an adequate solution that responds to our growth, increases efficiency for our customers as well as employees and guarantees improved mobility at the same time. In addition, the development of the GDC is a textbook example of the implementation of our ‘smart growth’ strategy.”
