Yaounde, Cameroon — The government of Cameroon and Barry Callebaut AG have signed a letter of intent to intensify their partnership on sustainable cocoa farming with a focus on supporting the next generation of growers, the supplier reports.
The collaboration will encourage future cocoa farmers through the New Generation program, which was set up by the Cameroon Cocoa and Coffee Interprofessional Council (CICC) and works to eliminate barriers that stop many younger Cameroonians from going into the cocoa sector, according to Barry Callebaut. The program aims to establish Centers of Excellence for post-harvest treatment and the systemizing of good agricultural practices.
Antoine de Saint-Affrique, CEO of Barry Callebaut, says: “Without cocoa farmers, there is no chocolate. By combining the expertise and resources on the ground from CICC and Barry Callebaut we want to accelerate the progress toward a sustainable cocoa farming sector, in order for cocoa farming to remain an attritive professional future for young Cameroonians.”
