Brokerage Founder Fred Mueller Dies At 89

Urbandale, IA — Fred Mueller, an original partner in Mueller-Yurgae Associates and confectionery salesman, passed away June 30. Services will be held July 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Ilse Westover Funeral Home in Des Moises, IA.

Born July 12, 1929, on Chicago’s southside, he was the middle of three children. After graduating from Mount Carmel High School, Mueller joined the U.S. Navy and went on to obtain a business degree at Southern Illinois University following his service. He married Dolores (Dee) Mueller on October 2, 1954. The pair had four children, 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

In 1955, he started in the confectionery industry with the E.J. Brach Candy Co. as a retail representative in Chicago. During his time with the company he had headquarter responsibilities for Jewell and Dominick’s, both accounts which he opened for Brach. The candymaker name Mueller divisional manager for the Iowa and Nebraska territory in 1968.

Some four years later, he partnered with Phil Yurgae, Howard Wirth and Jim Daniels to start Mueller Yurgae Associates. Among the brokerage firm’s first clients was the Cede Candy Co., which became Smarties Candy Co. and continues to be represented by Mueller Yurgae to this day, according to company Vice-President and Fred’s son Dan Mueller.
