Gastonia, NC — Charles Burdine “Byrd” Looper passed away from pneumonia on January 8. He was 86.
Born on March 15, 1931, Looper attended Duke University on a football scholarship, graduating in 1954. He then served as an officer in the Marine Corps until 1957. In 1955, he married LaNelle Edawards, and together they raised Lisa and Lesley.
Looper began his industry career in 1967, joining American Candy Co. as a director of sales and marketing. He became president of that company in 1979, and remained with the company until his retirement in 1990.
During his time in the business, he was an active industry member having served on the NCA board from 1981 to 1990. In 2001, he was inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame and was named Candy Dean by the former National Candy Wholesalers Association in 1980.
He is survived by his wife and daughters, as well as two grandchildren and his sister Nancy Looper Sharpe.
The memorial service will be held at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m., Saturday January 13.
