Rockville, MD — Total retail dollar sales for the U.S. chewing gum market increased slightly during 2018, according to Packaged Facts, reaching $4.1 billion.

Sugarfree options maintained market dominance, accounting for 85 percent of dollar sales, the research company reports.

“Gum marketers are developing fun and flavorful products and are innovating with non-caloric sweeteners, as well as stressing the potential benefits of dental and nutrition-bearing gums,” says David Sprinkle, research director for Packaged Facts.

Mars Wrigley Confectionery U.S., LLC and Mondelez International, Inc., through its Cadbury Adams division, were the leading manufacturers of chewing gum during the past year. More than half of U.S. adults chew gum, with Mars Wrigley drawing in 47 percent of those shoppers, compared with 43 percent for Mondelez. The Hershey Co. rounded out the top three producers in the market, according to Packaged Facts.
