Luxembourg — The Ferrero Group has committed to make all packaging completely reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, according to the candymaker’s 10th corporate social responsibility report.
The pledge further enhances Ferrero’s approach to continually improving its packaging footprint and fits the company’s strategy aimed at minimizing its environmental impact from raw materials and production plants to logistics. As part of the commitment, the candymaker signed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastic Economy Global Commitment.
“Ferrero has always taken a responsible approach to delivering high-quality product experiences that positively contribute to both today and tomorrow’s society,” says Giovanni Ferrero, executive chairman of the Ferrero Group. “This belief continues to drive us towards a responsible value chain by sourcing sustainably, producing sustainably and now by further strengthening our commitment to more sustainable packaging. We are pleased to announce our commitment towards 100 percent reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025 and signing The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation allows us to support the acceleration towards a circular economy.”
To achieve its goals, Ferrero is eliminating unnecessary plastic packaging, maximize the use of recycled materials where it is safe for consumers, and explore projects to test new compostable packaging materials for targeted applications, with focus on marine compostable solutions.
Ferrero reports it is partnering with recyclers, national waste management systems and non-food companies to explore applications for difficult to recycle packaging and identify projects to use plant packaging waste, ensuring circularity at the lowest environmental impact.
