Zurich, Switzerland — Nestlé Japan Ltd. will be the first candymaker to release products featuring Barry Callebaut AG’s Ruby chocolate, the supplier reports. The new variety will be featured in KitKat Chocolatory Sublime Ruby, which is launching January 19.
The new bars have a fresh berry-fruity taste and light pink hue, and Barry Callebaut notes no berries, berry flavor or colors are added. The naturally occurring flavors and colors are imparted through specific attributes in Ruby cocoa, which the chocolate supplier reports took years to unlock. Since announcing the chocolate variety this past fall, it has garnered strong attention from consumers worldwide.
Antoine de Saint-Affrique, Barry Callebaut CEO, says: “I am very pleased that our innovative breakthrough Ruby chocolate has come to life so quickly through our partnership with Nestlé and the pioneering KitKat brand in Japan. Nestlé was very quick in spotting the trend and in introducing a Ruby chocolate version of KitKat, which will entice consumers across Asia and beyond.”
The Japanese market is the first to receive a Ruby chocolate product because Nestlé Japan “was the quickest to see the trend, adopt it and get on the market,” Christiaan Prins, Barry Callebaut’s head of external affairs, tells CST.
He adds the company worked closely with the candymaker in developing the product, as co-creation is central element in how the chocolate supplier operates. “Nestlé of course brought on board a very elite Japanese chocolatier that helped created this fantastic product,” Prins adds.
Concerning the launch of a Ruby chocolate product in the U.S., he notes it is heavily dependent on candymakers’ speed to market. “It could be anywhere from a half year to 18 months,” he notes.
