Oakdale, CA — Jim Sconza, former president and CEO of Sconza Candy Co. and son of founder Vincenzo, has passed away.
He led the family business for more than half a century, stepping down from his president and CEO role in 2012 to serve as chairman of the board. Sconza continued to be actively engaged in the company until his health became an issue this past year, according to the family.
He began working at the candymaker as a young man, delivering orders to customers in California’s Bay area and picking up ingredients. Following graduate school, he joined the company full time.
While under his helm, the business relocated from Oakland to Oakdale, CA, to provide room for expansion and future growth. The 2008 move was Sconza’s long-time dream and what he called the “proudest day of my professional life,” according to the family.
During his more than six decades in the industry, Sconza was active in the Western Candy Conference. He served that association, which named him Member of the Year in 2004, as chairman, board member and committee member. He was also a member of NCA and the American Association of Candy Technologists.
In his personal life, Sconza was married to Carolyn for nearly 60 years, and they had three children and five grandchildren.
