Boca Raton — For his work in building bonds with representatives on the federal and state level and relentless support for the CandyPAC, R.M. Palmer Executive Vice-President and COO Mark Schlott received the 2019 Advocate of the Year Award from NCA at the State of the Industry Conference.
The award celebrates a member of the industry who has shown unparalleled leadership when it comes to advocating for chocolate and candy, according to the Association.
Kirk Vashaw, NCA vice-chairman and CEO and chairman of Spangler Candy Co., told the conference crowd Schlott knows the best way to reach political leaders and educate them on the industry is by inviting them to tour production facilities.
“These members of Congress have been able to meet the people that make up our great industry, from product line workers to packers and front office staff,” Vashaw said. “They’ve also been able to experience what goes on at many of our facilities across the country and see what goes into producing the fun and unique treats our industry makes.”
“Now more than ever it is critical to engage our representatives and the most effective way to educate them is at a grassroots, local level,” he said after accepting the award. “I’ve been involved with candy for 33 years and I’m grateful to be part of the greatest industry in the world.”
Past Advocate of the Year recipients include Pierson Clair, of Brown & Haley; Mitchell Goetze, of Goetze’s Candy Co., Inc.; and Tony Jacobs, of Bazooka Candy Brands.
